PRSSA INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE PRESIDENT’S LUNCH SPEAKER

It wasn’t long ago that I was in my last years of college worrying about if I was going to get a job and feeling absolutely terrified. Sharing the skills I learned during my first year on the job, I expressed these three important lessons to PRSSA chapter presidents across the globe:

  • Working with others outside your team and function forces you to be a better communicator.
  • Creativity wins. (Think outside the box)
  • Done is better than perfect.

AIRPORT HIGH SCHOOL COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

It was truly an honor to go back to my hometown and address the graduating class of 2016.

TAKING THE LEAD

When our Women in Manufacturing (WIM) leader was transferred last fall, someone had to step up and ensure the annual Speed Networking event was a success. I quickly raised my hand to help.

On Thursday, Nov. 12, 2016 Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly (D-Ham) hosted its WIM-PMN Annual Speed Networking Event. Leaders across GM spent their day getting to know employees from several of GM’s Michigan and Ohio facilities.

Networking events can be daunting, even for extroverts. Although, in order to build relationships and find growth opportunities, networking is crucial to career success. From affinity groups to mentoring groups, D-Ham’s Annual Speed Networking Event shed light unto the plethora of opportunities employees have within GM to network.

In the morning, guests heard from Ofori Agboka of GMAAN and Matt Creech of SAE International. Agboka and Creech both informed employees of how they could expand employees’ networks by getting involved in their organizations.

Next, guests and leaders participated in an hour and a half speed networking session.  Groups made of 4-5 guests sat and talked for 20 minutes before rotating to the next table leader. Everyone was able to meet six leaders during the networking session and had plenty of time during breaks and lunch to meet additional leaders.

“As a recent new hire, I really enjoyed meeting the leaders for the first time, but it was equally as beneficial to meet employees from across GM,” D-Ham Communications Manager Courtney Zemke said.

After lunch, keynote speaker and Senior Vice President Global Human Resources John Quattrone gave the following tips to being a successful leader:

  1. Practice truth and transparency
  2.  Earn trust and reputation
  3.  Remember how you got here
  4.  Stretch your personal comfort zone

Quattrone says that with individual excellence, exposure, relationships, mentoring and a little luck, you can go a long way.

“Everyone I spoke with appreciated the time spent by key leaders to provide insight into their careers and offer advice so openly,” D-Ham Personnel Director Jeremy Vida said.

Networking may be intimidating at first but like anything, the more you practice, the easier it gets. Being a fearless networker allows you to develop relationships with amazing people, show your value to decision-makers, and ultimately better position yourself for exciting opportunities.

The event was organized by D-Ham’s PMN and WIM affinity groups. The event happens every fall at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant. Stay tuned for the chance to attend this unique and rewarding opportunity next year.

GM TOUR FOR SE MICHIGAN PUBLIC RELATION STUDENTS

I organized and executed “GM Day” for 26 PRSSA Students. After the tour, I surveyed the students. Read what they had to say:
